In Formula E, qualifying is key, and the penultimate classification session of the season on Saturday proved to be a historic moment for Monaco’s only racing team.
From Groups 2 and 4, both Edoardo Mortara and Norman Nato were on a charge and by securing a place inside the top six, both advanced to the Super Pole shootout.
This marked the first time that both ROKiT Venturi Racing cars have participated in Super Pole since the 2016 Punta del Este E-Prix, coincidentally some 2,016 days earlier.
On that day, team-mates Stephane Sarrazin and Mike Conway qualified in P4 and P5 and as if by fate, so too did Edo and Norman as they lined up on the grid for Round 14.
From P4, Edo showcased just why he is our most successful driver to date as he demonstrated another fighting drive to advance his championship aspirations.
Through the strategic use of Attack Mode, the Swiss-Italian worked his way all the way to the front and was locked in a closely contested battle with Lucas di Grassi.
With di Grassi opting for an alternative Attack Mode strategy, Edo was ultimately passed by the Season 3 champion and missed out on P1 by only 0.141-seconds at the flag.
This marked Edo’s fourth podium of the season, his 20th top 10 finish in Formula E, and our 10th podium as a team as he surpassed a landmark tally of 200 career points.
After being firmly in the hunt for silverware on Saturday, Norman was in fine form over the course of the Berlin weekend and on Sunday, showed the pace he’s truly capable of.
In the season finale, the Frenchman started from P6 on the grid after failing to set a lap in Super Pole but with a clinical drive in the race, he was continually on the charge.
By the end of lap 1, the 29-year-old was already in P4 and by activating Attack Mode, fought all the way to the front, overtaking Alexander Sims, Oliver Rowland and Stoffel Vandoorne.
At the helm of the field, Norman remained in complete control and took a dominant maiden victory by 2.270-seconds over the next nearest driver.
With this result, Norman now owns his own piece of history as ROKiT Venturi Racing’s only rookie winner and the team’s most successful debutant on record.
Race 2 on Sunday came to a cruel early conclusion for Edo, but despite failing to see the chequered flag, our Formula E veteran still had plenty to celebrate.
Having amassed a total of 92 points over the course of the season, Edo secured P2 in the Drivers’ Championship standings, only seven points adrift of winner Nyck de Vries.
With this result, and after a spectacular season of racing, Edo became Formula E’s first-ever vice-World Champion – an achievement worthy of his natural talent and raw pace behind the wheel.
A combined haul of 55 points from the 2021 Berlin E-Prix played a crucial role in the Teams’ Standings, and with 142 points on the board, we secured P7 in the final classification.
This makes Season 7 our most successful campaign in Formula E to date, as we beat our previous personal best haul from Season 5 by 54 points.
In comparison to last season’s total of 44, this marks a points increase of 222.7%, and with the best yet to come, we’re already looking ahead to Season 8.
