Q&A: Susie Wolff on the six-race Showdown

Team Principal Susie Wolff examines the complexities of Formula E’s six-race finale…

How will ROKiT Venturi Racing balance the needs of sport with the present safety concerns caused by the coronavirus pandemic?

“It’s a very special situation but we have had a good amount of time to prepare for the season finale and we are fully prepared to work in accordance with the guidelines that Formula E have established with the German authorities. Berlin will be completely different to everything we’ve experienced before but since quarantine began, we’ve all been adapting and learning to work under different regulations. When our factory re-opened, we had special measures in place and we also experienced this during our media day in Alés. Ultimately, I think it will come down to good communication within the team and I have no doubt that we have everything covered off from both a health and safety and sporting perspective.”

What are the challenges that are presented to personnel by holding six races in nine days?

“The first challenge, obviously, will be maintaining momentum. We need to find a balance between the optimal output for performance and making sure that our mechanics and engineers are really well-rested. This all comes down to communication and we’re very aware that Berlin is going to present a very unique challenge. By having a limited number of team members, it will be easier to have an overview of everybody. It will also be a big challenge for the drivers – Formula E cars are complex to drive and they will have three different track configurations to get used to and three back-to-back double-headers to compete in. We aim to create an environment where everyone can push when they need to but also get an optimal amount of rest so they stay at their best.”

How has ROKiT Venturi Racing prepared for the Season 6 finale?

“As soon as we received official notice of the Season 6 showdown, we went into prep mode and as with a situation like this, we’re as prepared as we can be. There’s only so much you can do before you receive the track configurations but in that build-up, it’s about making sure that the drivers have plenty of time in the simulator to revise scenarios before learning each layout. In a situation like this in a championship that is highly unpredictable, we need to be on our toes and we’re prepared for every eventuality.”

How important will the role of technology and the support of partners be for ROKiT Venturi Racing staff working remotely?

“Technology has a vital role to play in the Season 6 showdown. Because of COVID-19 regulations, we’re restricted in terms of the number of personnel we can have at the track, and staying connected in real-time with our headquarters in Monaco will be essential. The data that we gather in Berlin will be invaluable and as such, the constant flow of information is incredibly important. While the drivers have a massive job, our technical support will be crucial.”

What are ROKiT Venturi Racing’s aims for the end of the season?

“I think we showed serious promise and moments of brilliance in the first five races of Season 6 but we also encountered some issues which we have worked hard to develop solutions for. It will be a very interesting time for us in Berlin, we want to be fighting towards the front of the pack and ultimately fighting for podiums and I think that’s realistic. The championship is still very open and to have a car that is in a position for the drivers to do their absolute best where we can continue to rack up the points is the best possible outcome for us. Everybody wants to be in a position to contend for race victories though and of course, it would be great to win.”
