2020 Mexico City E-Prix

Points for ROKiT Venturi Racing in chaotic Mexico City E-Prix

In Detail

After a four-week break following the Santiago E-Prix, Formula E returned to action at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez – a circuit that holds special memories for the team, 12 months on from our first of three podiums in Season 5.

Edoardo Mortara and Felipe Massa showcased promising pace from the outset in Mexico City – posting the first and fourth fastest times in the opening practice session.

Qualifying would later yield a P12 grid slot for Edo, who started the race from P11 after a penalty for Pascal Wehrlein. A lock-up for Felipe on his flying lap placed him in P21, the Brazilian eventually lining up P19 on the grid courtesy of the penalties to both Wehrlein and team-mate Jérôme d'Ambrosio.

With inroads to be made in the race, Edo made a strong start – running inside the points in P10 from the early stages. Likewise, Felipe quickly moved up to P17 and was closing in on the battle ahead – but made contact with the barriers at Turn 1 after striking a bump on the racing surface, bringing his race to an early conclusion.

In an intense wheel-to-wheel battle for the final points-paying positions, Edo held on to edge James Calado across the line and secure P8, with four hard-fought championship points in the bag

Susie Wolff, Team Principal

“Today’s race was challenging. It was a shame for Felipe to exit the race so early – but luckily, we managed to stay inside the top 10 with Edo and bring home some more points. We didn’t have the performance that we expected and it’s difficult to say at this stage where our pace went from practice into the race. We weren’t on the mark today and we need to analyse what happened for Marrakesh. Even if the race didn’t go our way, it’s always a privilege to race here in Mexico City. The fans create such a special atmosphere – it’s a unique venue.”

Edoardo Mortara

“We didn’t quite have the pace today and we need to understand what happened. In qualifying we had some balance issues which meant that we couldn’t compete at the front and the race was also a struggle. We scored some points, so that’s better than nothing – but we need to analyse why we were lacking so much pace today so we can return to form in Marrakesh.”

Felipe Massa

“Today’s race was very unfortunate for me. I gained a handful of positions at the start and, from there, I was waiting for a clear path in front as anything can happen at the start. Unfortunately, I touched a bump in Turn 1 when I was on the throttle and it just pushed me into the wall. I’m disappointed because it was a race where a lot happened, so we could have gained a lot of positions and points. The fans and atmosphere over the weekend were amazing and I wish we had something to show for our hard work.”
