The 2021 Berlin E-Prix marked Formula E’s final weekend of competition this season, and once more, the Tempelhof Airport acted as the backdrop to a dramatic title showdown.
With 18 drivers in contention for the series’ first-ever World Championship crown, the battle was fierce and here at ROKiT Venturi Racing, we were firmly in the hunt.
In the first qualifying session of the weekend, the numbers immediately aligned, and with both Edo and Norman advancing to Super Pole, it proved to be a truly historic moment.
With both drivers progressing to the pole position shootout, it marked the first time that both ROKiT Venturi Racing cars have participated in Super Pole since Season 2.
This was at the 2016 Punta del Este E-Prix which was coincidentally 2,016 days earlier, and just as we secured P4 and P5 on the grid then, we took the same result this time around.
From the second and third rows, both Edo and Norman were on a charge and with careful strategy management, spent a large portion of Race 1 running in P1 and P2.
Although both ultimately fell back, Edo successfully took P2 at the line – a mere 0.141-seconds shy of the win – to take his fourth podium of the season.
This top-three result marked our 10th as a team, his 20th points finish and also allowed him to surpass the milestone of scoring 200 points in his Formula E career to date.
Norman, meanwhile, only missed out on a podium by 0.090s, but by taking P4, backed up a total of 30 points from Race 1 – our largest haul from one single race this season.
One day later, however, Norman discovered the taste of champagne by displaying a dominant and clinical drive in the season finale.
Advancing to Super Pole for the fifth time this season, the 29-year-old lined up in P6 on the grid, and with a perfect strategy, fought forward to the very front of the field.
Displaying the definition of domination, Norman secured his maiden Formula E victory to end Season 7 on a high, standing proudly on the top step of the podium.
With this result, Norman became the first ROKiT Venturi Racing driver to win a race in their rookie season, our most successful rookie driver to date and our third-highest points scorer on record.
For Edo, an accident on the opening lap of the finale brought his championship fight to a cruel conclusion but having performed at his best for the entirety of the season, his standing was unbeatable.
With 92 points, Edo maintained P2 in the Drivers’ Standings to become Formula E’s very first vice-World Champion, falling only seven points shy of champion Nyck de Vries.
Combining this tally with Norman’s 54 points, our all-time points total surpassed the 500-point milestone, and with 147 points on the board, Season 7 is our most successful campaign yet.
This beats our previous personal best from Season 5 by 54 points and in comparison to last season, marks a points increase by a staggering 222.7%.
En route to this landmark moment, we completed 212 laps over the course of the Berlin weekend, bringing our total season lap count up to 1,787.
The equates to 4,855-kilometres of driving using fully electric power and the equivalent of driving from our base in Monaco to Diriyah, Saudi Arabia – the location of the first race of Season 8.
As we celebrate this landmark moment, our attention is already focused on the next challenge and with the aim of delivering bigger and better performances next season, the countdown has already commenced.
