Following the completion of the Rome E-Prix, Formula E returned to the Circuit Ricardo Tormo for the first time since November to contest the inaugural running of the Valencia E-Prix.
Marking Formula E’s first-ever race in Spain, the double-header event also marked the series’ first race on a permanent track and as such, an interesting weekend of racing was in store.
Despite being a familiar circuit as the long-term home of pre-season testing, several changes created a new configuration altogether for ROKiT Venturi Racing.
Throughout the third race weekend of the season, drivers Edoardo Mortara and Norman Nato were in fine form, and while Saturday didn’t play out the way we wanted, Sunday marked a new day filled with new opportunities.
In a damp qualifying session for Race 2, Norman mastered ever-evolving track conditions to progress to Super Pole for the second weekend in a row, although a pair of difficult sessions left Edo with an uphill battle in both races.
The Swiss-Italian showed just what he was capable of though, and by digging in deep and placing his full focus on the race, he made big inroads as he carved his way through the field.
Although Saturday came to a chaotic early conclusion, Sunday yielded points as over the weekend, Edo performed an incredible 22 on-track overtakes, showing just why he is our most decorated driver to date.
After securing P6 on the grid for the second race of the weekend, Norman too continued to fight the fight with his full attention firmly focussed on the top three ahead.
With careful energy management on what was a high consumption circuit, the Frenchman successfully progressed to the scrap for the podium and battled all the way to the line.
Closing in on Jake Dennis, Norman was in hot pursuit of his maiden victory but by falling only 0.8-seconds short, the 27-year-old took P2 at the chequered flag.
As a result of a five-second time penalty, however, Norman took P5 in the final classification, missing out on the podium for a second time this season.
Notching 10 points, Norman secured his best finish of the campaign so far and took the first of what will undoubtedly be many top 10 finishes in his Formula E career.
With Edo now holding 32 points and Norman 11, as a team, we now hold 43 points in the championship – only 1 point shy of our total tally from Season 6 after only six races.
En route to our first double-points finish of Season 7, we turned a combined 234 laps over the course of the weekend – the equivalent of driving 790-kilometres.
This equates to the direct distance from the coast of Valencia to Monaco – the location of the next race of the current campaign as ROKiT Venturi Racing comes home.
