The New York City E-Prix has earned historic status in the FIA Formula E World Championship and in 2022, hosted its ninth and 10th races since first joining the fully-electric calendar in Season 3.
Returning to the Brooklyn Street Circuit, the venue again delivered exciting wheel-to-wheel action in what was the series’ first double-header since May’s Berlin E-Prix.
After tasting success in previous rounds, aspirations were high for the weekend and in qualifying for Race One, Lucas di Grassi showcased his unprecedented experience by mastering challenging, changeable track conditions.
By setting the fastest time in Group B – a 1:10.687 run – the Brazilian secured his place in the duel stages and first faced off against Sebastien Buemi in Quarter-Final Four.
With a 1:12.546 run, he successfully defeated the Nissan e.dams driver by 0.115 seconds to secure his place in the Semi-Finals where he would go head-to-head with Stoffel Vandoorne.
In a closely contested fight, Lucas unfortunately lost out to the Belgian by only 0.044 seconds but by taking third – his best qualifying result of the season to date – he was in a prime position to challenge for points in the race.
When Saturday’s battle in the Big Apple commenced, Lucas made immediate progress by clearing Vandoorne into Turn One before setting his sights on polesitter, Nick Cassidy, with whom he fought for the lead throughout.
Light rain at the mid-stage intensified in the closing minutes, and with Lucas aquaplaning in Turn Six, alongside Cassidy and Vandoorne, the race was red flagged and not resumed.
This allowed Lucas to finish second – a result that marked his second podium of the season, the team’s seventh of the year, the 37th of his career and his best result of the campaign so far.
After qualifying in ninth, meanwhile, Edoardo Mortara fought forward in a late push to take fifth at the flag, although a time penalty post-race relegated him to his starting position.
En route to this result, the Swiss-Italian also set the fastest lap of the race and the first of his Formula E career in what was his 58th start in the series.
By taking home 21 points in Race One, expectations were high for Race Two, although a series of issues impacted the team’s progress early in the morning.
After facing a problem at the start of FP3, Edo lost preparation time before being relegated from qualifying after suffering from a brake-by-wire issue which left him starting at the back of the grid.
Lucas, on the other hand, was third in FP3 but after again topping Group B, had his fastest two times from qualifying deleted which eliminated him to an 18th-placed starting spot.
After gaining ground initially, both drivers opted to under consume and conserve energy in the first part of Race Two before then fighting forward with the benefit of Attack Mode in the final third.
Lucas quickly ascended to 11th while Edo followed in formation by recovering to 12th after starting from the back row of the grid in 21st.
In a final push for points, Lucas unfortunately came to blows with Jean-Eric Vergne in Turn Six and was forced to retire, although this, in turn, promoted Edo into the top 10 where he remained at the wave of the chequered flag.
By taking home 10th, Edo gained an impressive 11 positions in the race and by also posting the fastest lap for a second time in as many days, made history, by becoming the first driver in Formula E to set the fastest lap in both races of a double-header weekend.
ROKiT Venturi Racing has now set 50% of all fastest laps in Season 8 to date, taking six away from 12 races.
By taking home a total of 23 points away from New York City, the team remains in the hunt for both the Drivers’ and Teams’ World Championships by holding second in both and continues to hold the longest active points-scoring streak in the field, now standing at 14.
To extend this run, the team completed a total of 270 laps in Brooklyn – the equivalent of 626 kilometres – which brings the team’s season total to 4,518 kilometres.
As the crow flies, this is the distance between our base in Monaco to the ExCeL Circuit in London – the site of the next race of Season 8 – twice over.
Formula E’s eighth season will continue on July 30-31 for another double-header round which marks the penultimate weekend of action in the current campaign.
