At the Apex: What to watch out for at the 2024 London E-Prix

In just a few days, Season 10 of the FIA Formula E World Championship will come to a close.

The 2024 London E-Prix is our final opportunity to add more points to the board, and it takes place on one of the most radically unique tracks in global motorsport.

The indoor-outdoor ExCeL Circuit truly is one of a kind, and with its unique transition, countless surface changes, pure technicality, and festival-like fan feeling, it is the perfect place to finish an action packed season.

From energy saving targets to the importance of Qualifying, this is what should you watch out for in the Season 10 finale.

A Battle of Strategy

Based in the Docklands area of London, the 2.080-kilometre-long ExCeL Circuit is one of the shortest tracks on the Season 10 calendar, and with narrow straights, and tight, technical corners, it presents an incredible driving challenge.

But while the track tests driver skill and confidence alike, it puts very little strain on energy consumption, meaning that in stark contrast to recent races in Portland, Shanghai and Berlin, London has a low energy sensitivity level.

Due to the ease with which drivers can recover energy, the season finale will be very strategic, embodying Formula E’s age-old comparison to a high-speed game of chess.

Strategy will be everything this weekend.

Going for the Gap

Overtaking is a part of that strategy, and because of London’s naturally low energy sensitivity level, passing can sometimes be very difficult.

In Season 9, this was especially the case where, across Saturday and Sunday, we saw races that were dominated by track position.

In this situation, Attack Mode timing is critical and the device can not only be used to fight up the order but can be utilised as a defensive tool to hold your place on the road.

Responding to real-time race evolution will be vital in this scenario, and by racing with an element of fluidity, we can claw our way to success.

Every Lap Matters

The inevitable challenges drivers will face while overtaking will increase the importance of Qualifying, and this cannot be overstated. In London, Qualifying is critical.

It isn’t rocket science – the higher a driver starts, they higher they will likely finish. And with overtaking difficulties considered, it will be challenging for drivers to fight through the field as often seen in peloton events.

Thanks to supreme one lap speed, Qualifying has been one of our strong points in 2024, especially at more technical circuits such as Mexico City, Diriyah, São Paulo, and Tokyo – tracks which have key similarities to London.

The Season Finale

We’ve said it already – the 2024 London E-Prix will be the final race of Season 10, and it’s our final opportunity to score points. As such, we’ll likely see drivers taking more risks.

For some drivers at the heart of the World Championship battle, they have everything to lose but for others, they have absolutely everything to gain.

London will be the ultimate game of risk and reward, but while opportunism can sometimes bring the biggest results, consistency is what pays long-term.

A consistent approach is usually the best avenue to success, and by remaining measured throughout practice and into Qualifying, we’ll be following the same process as always this weekend.

Onwards to Season 11

Our start to 2024 was undeniably strong, but after a difficult run of races quite recently, Season 10 has been a tale of two halves for Maserati MSG Racing.

When we set out on a campaign, we always aim for glory and although the dice may not fall our way, we remain as hungry as ever, relentlessly pursuing the top step.

Formula E is a momentum-driven championship, however, and if we can end this season on a high, we know that we can take momentum with us into Season 11.

For next season, everything will be new, given the arrival of the Gen3 Evo, but moving into the unknown with added confidence always serves as an advantage and benefit.
