As the home of the Colosseum, the birthplace of Baroque and the final destination of every road, Rome is one of Europe’s oldest cities and marks the next stop on the Season 7 calendar.
After first featuring in Formula E’s fourth season, the 2021 edition of the Rome E-Prix marks the third to date and will be the first time we have raced in the Italian capital since 2019.
Featuring the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, the city’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and as such, Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world.
7-kilometers South of the tourist centre, however, is the EUR district and this will once again be the home of Formula E’s iconic Italian leg this season.
As an acronym for the Esposizione Universale Roma, the EUR is Rome’s business district, but despite it falling outside of the tourist spotlight, it is not short of history.
In 1960, the district hosted part of the summer Olympic games and with imposing architecture lining every street, we’ll be racing through an iconic backdrop this weekend.
The start line sits alongside the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana – also known as the Square Colosseum – which has appeared in films including The Conformist and Zoolander 2.
Turns 14-16 meanwhile, snake around the reinforced concrete Marconi Obelisk in the Piazzale Marconi, just before Turn 19 arrives at the Palazzo dei Congressi.
Here, the 1960 Olympic fencing competitions were contested, and just as two Monegasque fencers fought it out here 61 years ago, we’ll be having our own duel this weekend as the Principality’s only racing team.
The 2021 Rome E-Prix takes place on an updated version of the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR, and despite it being two corners shorter, it is actually 0.525-kilometers longer than its predecessor.
At 3.386-kilometers long, the circuit in Rome is the longest track on the Season 7 calendar, and with high-speed corners and long straights, it will prove to be a true test.
Energy management will be especially sensitive and this will place increased importance on the art of harvesting throughout the double-header event.
As our resident Swiss-Italian, the Rome E-Prix marks Edoardo Mortara’s home race and as such, signals a special event for our in-house street circuit specialist.
Race 1 will mark his 35th as part of the ROKiT Venturi Racing family, and coming off the back of a podium performance in Diriyah, Edo is in fine form.
When the starting lights flash out this Saturday, we intend to ROKiT from the get-go.
