City Guide: Discover the City of Angels

Learn more about Formula E’s newest calendar addition...

City of Angels

Since 2016, racing in Mexico has been a regular habit for Formula E, however, this season, the championship swaps the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez for a new prospect in Puebla.

Founded in 1531, Puebla is informally known as the City of Angels – a nickname inspired by the legend of its origins and the visions of a local bishop who envisioned the spot for the settlement that stands today.

Fast-forward almost 500 years, and with a population of 3.25million, Puebla is now Mexico’s fourth-largest city and is acclaimed for its architecture and cuisine.

Because of its history and wide-ranging structural styles, Puebla was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is renowned for its Talavera ceramics and is also the home of Mole poblano hot sauce.

Look East of the city, however, and you will find the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed – our home for the coming weekend of racing and our next stop in the current campaign.

An International Return

The Autodromo Miguel E. Abed first opened in 1985, but when it was redeveloped in 2005, it became Mexico’s second racing circuit to attain FIA homologation.

With a variety of configurations – including an oval speedway layout – Puebla’s first international race was held in 2005 when it hosted the World Touring Car Championship [WTCC].

The WTCC visited the venue a total of four times until 2009 and since then, the circuit has hosted the NASCAR Mexico series regularly.

By taking to the track this weekend, Formula E’s Puebla E-Prix will mark the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed’s first international race in 12 years and we can’t wait to get the action underway.

Past Points and Podiums

Here at ROKiT Venturi Racing, we have a proven track record in Mexico and since 2016, we have shown just what we are capable of when Formula E visits North America.

While we scored points in the series’ first-ever race in Mexico, our best performance by far came in Season 5 in what was one of Formula E’s most nail-biting events in history.

In a race that went down to the wire, Edoardo Mortara memorably soared to his second career podium in Formula E by netting P3 in one final dash to the chequered flag.

With a 100% points-scoring record in Mexico to date, Edo has more than shown what he can do and we can’t wait to see our in-house street circuit specialist in action this weekend.

Formula E’s Newest Addition

The Season 7 Formula E calendar is full of new additions, and while we raced in Spain for the very first time in April, Puebla marks the series’ newest event.

When the starting lights flash out this Saturday, Puebla will become the 24th city to host a Formula E race as the series surpasses seven race events in Mexico after the incoming double-header.

The Puebla E-Prix will also be only the second time that Formula E has raced on a purpose-built circuit, and with new unknowns ahead, an exciting and unpredictable weekend beckons.
