In Seasons 1 and 2, London acted as the backdrop to two of Formula E’s most dramatic title showdowns and this weekend makes a return to the calendar for the first time since 2016.
With a 1,500-year history, London’s origins trace back to the Romans in 50AD and the city has been the home of the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans throughout the ages.
With almost 9-million residents and accounting for 13.4% of the UK’s population, London has grown rapidly since its creation becoming a cultural hub for art, history, entertainment and architecture.
With attractions such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and The British Museum, London is one of the most visited cities in the world, with almost 38-million people visiting in 2018 alone.
This weekend with Formula E back in town, the paddock will be descending on the Royal Docks as we gear up for the penultimate weekend of racing this season.
The return of the London E-Prix sees Formula E swap Battersea Park for the ExCeL arena, but despite being a new circuit, the venue is well acquainted with competition.
In 2012, the ExCeL played a key role in the Summer Olympic Games which were held in London for a record-breaking third time.
The arena was divided into five separate sports halls and became the backdrop for all boxing, fencing, judo, taekwondo, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling competitions.
This weekend, however, the ExCeL will be converted into a race track for the very first time where the fight for the Season 7 crown will continue to heat up.
At 2.252-kilometres long, the ExCeL London circuit is the newest on the Season 7 calendar but is also perhaps the most unique in the history of Formula E.
In what is a world-first for motorsport, an international race will be held both indoors and outdoors, courtesy of the ExCeL’s innovative design.
The circuit includes the arena’s access roads and incorporates the indoor space itself which will be the location of the all-important race start.
When the starting lights flash out for the first time this Saturday, history will be made and we can’t wait to be at its centre here at ROKiT Venturi Racing.
Alongside its unique indoor and outdoor status, the ExCeL also holds the record for the most corners to feature on a Formula E circuit, with drivers navigating 22 turns every lap.
This makes the ExCeL the most technical track of Season 7 and also the most complex in the history of the championship.
Prior to the ExCeL’s arrival to the calendar, this record was previously held jointly between Diriyah, Punta del Este and the original version of Rome, which each featured 21 corners.
