Data Driven: How we Won the Puebla E-Prix

Discover step-by-step how we secured our second Formula E victory in Puebla…

The Puebla E-Prix was a landmark weekend of competition for us here at ROKiT Venturi Racing as we visited the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed for the very first time.

After a competitive Race 1, the battle on Sunday was intense and the strategy intriguing, but how did we secure our second victory in the FIA Formula E World Championship?

To answer that question, we’ve delved deep into the numbers from the second race of the weekend, creating a data-driven, lap-by-lap guide as to how we won the Puebla E-Prix:

Qualifying From Group 2, a 1:23.235 run allows Edo to advance to the Super Pole shootout for the third time this season. In his final qualifying run, Edo produces a 1:23.886s lap to secure P3 on the grid – his highest starting position of the season.

Lap 1 – A strong start from Edo allows the Swiss-Italian to get the jump on front-row starter Pascal Wehrlein off the line. Edo overtakes the Porsche driver around the outside of Turn 1 to take P2, with Oliver Rowland in the lead.

Lap 3 – Lapping the Autodromo in 1:27.707s, Edo sets the fastest lap of the race so far and starts to close the gap on Rowland, slashing the Briton’s lead by 0.280-seconds.

Lap 5 – Race-leader Rowland activates his first use of Attack Mode, kick-starting the strategy fight at the front. Losing 2.9-seconds, the Nissan e.dams driver re-joins in P3 as Edo advances to P1.

Lap 7 – With 18-minutes of the race completed, Edo activates Attack Mode for the first time to obtain a four-minute 35kW power boost. He re-joins the race in P3, losing three seconds due to the positioning of the deployment zone in Turn 8.

Lap 8 – As the new race leader, Wehrlein activates Attack Mode for the first time and is followed by Rowland who deploys his second. This promotes Edo back into P1 with a 1.1-second advantage.

Lap 13 – After opening up an impressive 4.4-second lead, Edo arms his final use of Attack Mode. Despite a time loss of 3.6-seconds upon activation, the Swiss-Italian maintains his lead, performing a textbook overcut strategy – one of the most decisive moments of the race.

Lap 18 – Edo continues to lead, but when Wehrlein overtakes Rowland for P2, the Porsche driver emerges as our biggest competitor with 18-minutes + 1 lap to go.

Lap 19 – In clean air, Wehrlein starts to close the gap on Edo, slicing his lead by 0.857-seconds on one lap alone.

Lap 22 – With Wehrlein holding an energy advantage over Edo, the gap between the pair is at the smallest it has ever been, split by only 0.406-seconds. With an energy deficit, Edo is forced to save more without compromising his lap time.

Lap 26 – Against the odds, Edo extends his lead to 1.933-seconds after eclipsing Wehrlein’s last lap by 1.519-seconds. This gives the Swiss-Italian star some breathing room with seven-minutes + 1 lap to go.

Lap 30 A high-intensity 1:25.970s run sees Edo pump in his fastest lap of the race.

Lap 32 – Edo takes the chequered flag to secure his and ROKiT Venturi Racing’s second victory in Formula E. Notching 25 points and scoring a total haul of 40 points in only two races, Edo is propelled from P8 to P1 in the Drivers’ Championship, holding a 10 point advantage.
