Following a promising pre-season programme in November 2021, ROKiT Venturi Racing entered the 2021/22 campaign with high aspirations as the Formula E field reconvened in Diriyah in January.
With more power, less practice time and a new qualifying format, a handful of changes ensured that the competition was refreshed for Formula E’s most anticipated season to date.
A five-six finish in Race One was a precursor to a historic result, and Edoardo Mortara and Lucas di Grassi showcased their heavy-hitting firepower immediately by delivering a landmark performance.
By shining bright under the lights of Formula E’s only night race, the duo delivered our first-ever double podium performance after taking the chequered flag in first and third.
Amassing a helping of 58 points from one weekend alone, Monaco’s only racing team set out its intentions at the first available opportunity and surged to the top of the World Teams’ Championship.
After facing challenging races in Rome and Monaco, the team hit the reset button when we returned to Berlin in May and with a refreshed attitude, unleashed an unprecedented level of performance yet to be seen in Season 8.
In Race One at Tempelhof, Edo secured his first pole position in Formula E and the team’s first since the 2015 London E-Prix, some 2,512 days earlier in Season 1.
The Swiss-Italian converted his top starting position into a comfortable second win of the season, but again found the sweet-spot by taking home a second pole in as many attempts for Race Two.
Although he fell short of Nyck de Vries in the second leg of the double-header, Edo completed one of his most dominant weekends in Formula E in a performance that can only be described as flawless.
When we returned to Marrakech, we did so with unfinished business after coming close to the podium in Formula E’s most recent race at the venue, back in Season 6.
Off the back of three consecutive podiums, however, morale was high and after qualifying second, Edo delivered a supreme drive in the race to take home another memorable result.
By defeating Antonio Felix da Costa following the deployment of a clinical strategy, Edo took home his third win of 2022 to cast aside the ghosts of Season 6 at the Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan.
The London E-Prix marked the penultimate stop of the 2022 season and after fighting from the back of thegrid in Race One with a penalty, Lucas was looking to set the record straight.
With a hard reset overnight, the Brazilian approached Sunday with renewed ambitions and by qualifying on the front row, was in a prime position to fight for the win.
Over the next 45 minutes, Lucas was locked in a race-long duel with Jake Dennis but by extracting his full potential, beat the Andretti driver to take his first win for ROKiT Venturi Racing.
As the 13th victory of his career, his trip to the top step was a record-equalling result in Formula E’s history books by tying with Sebastien Buemi for the most wins in the fully-electric series.
Lucas’ 13th win placed him on his 994th career point and when Formula E headed to Seoul, South Korea, for the final race of the season, he had one key goal – scoring his 1,000th.
His pace was evident throughout practice and come qualifying, he excelled through the duels to start from the front row, sitting in a prime position to fight for the podium.
By delivering a confident drive, Lucas took third at the chequered flag – a result that secured him 15 points and as such, his historic 1,000th point in Formula E.
In eight seasons of the series, no other driver has achieved this feat and as one of the most talented drivers on the grid, Lucas’ points streak will only continue into Season 9.
Difficult races in New York City and London only added to Edo’s motivation as Season 8 reached its boiling point, and in the finale, he pulled out all of the stops to return to the top step.
From setting the pace in practice to battling to the front row in qualifying, he was on a charge and when the race got underway, Edo’s offensive only continued.
By dispatching of Da Costa on lap two, Edo built a confident gap that no driver was able to close and took home his fourth win of the season in Seoul.
With the race marking Formula E’s 100th, Edo also secured another piece of history after also winning the series’ 50th in Hong Kong back in Season 5.
After ending Season 7 with our highest-ever haul of points, it was clear that ROKiT Venturi Racing was only gaining momentum and Season 8 didn’t buck the trend.
With five wins, 10 podiums, two pole positions, six fastest laps and points in all 16 races, the 2021/22 campaign was by far our most successful to date.
Notching a total of 295 points, we surpassed our total haul from Season 7 by more than double and fought until the very end of the championship.
As Formula E’s vice World Teams’ Champions, this achievement is a testament to the hard work of every person at ROKiT Venturi Racing, who go above and beyond in their duty by striving for perfection in performance.
Forgetting every win, podium and point, Season 8 marked the end of an era for Formula E which, upon the conclusion of the Seoul E-Prix, closed its Gen2 chapter.
In 55 races, the Gen2 car redefined electric vehicle performance and revolutionised an industry by setting a new benchmark for competition in motorsport.
Delivering 18 winners and 24 different podium finishers – 50% of which finished on the podium in Season 6’s never-ending stay in Berlin – the unpredictability was unmatched.
The Gen2 car paved the way for our own rise as a team and after scoring our maiden win in Formula E’s 50th race, a further seven trips to the top step followed, alongside a total of 18 podium visits.
After scoring points in more than 75% of races in Gen2, this era has ended, although with Season 9 already approaching and ahead of our multi-year partnership with Maserati, the story is far from over.
