In Detail

Surpassing the half-way point of the championship, Formula E’s Race at Home Challenge did battle on the digital airport apron of the Flughafen Tempelhof Circuit for Round 5, racing at the home of the Berlin E-Prix.

On this demanding track, and with a continued ‘Race Royale’ format, qualifying was vital. Launching their offensive from the second and third groups, Felipe Massa and Edoardo Mortara secured P17 and P6 on the grid.

Obtaining a good launch at the start of the race, Edo maintained P6 on the opening tour of the 15-lap affair while Felipe advanced to P16, making up one position from his ninth-row starting spot.

P16 became P13 at the start of lap 2 when Felipe cleared Nyck de Vries, James Calado, and Robin Frijns, while ahead, Edo overtook Maximilian Gunther into Turn 9 to take P5.

Coming under pressure from behind, Frijns passed Felipe in the closing stages of the race, with the Brazilian eliminated three laps from the wave of the chequered flag, finishing in P14.

Locked in a tense scrap for the podium, Edo secured a hard-fought P5 only one-second shy of silverware, notching 10 points and a third consecutive points-paying result for ROKiT Venturi Racing.

Elsewhere in The Race All-Star Series Pro Cup, Tom Dillmann secured P5 and P10 for ROKiT Venturi Racing while Esteban Guerrieri took P35 and P31.

In Words

Edoardo Mortara

“After a strong performance in Hong Kong last weekend, it feels very good to start gaining momentum in the Race at Home Challenge. I did a good qualifying lap to start P6 and moved into the top five on the second lap. Pascal [Wehrlein], Daniel [Abt] and I were all evenly matched on pace and the fight at the end was very close! I’m already excited to see what I can achieve next weekend when we race again.”

Felipe Massa

“The race didn’t go so well for me but I tried everything I could. I had some contact at the start but still managed to make some good progress. The pace was there and I was very close to avoiding elimination but unfortunately, I just fell short. P14 wasn’t the result I expected but I’m looking forward to racing again in support of UNICEF.”
