As a regular feature on the Formula E calendar since Season 3, the Brooklyn Street Circuit – and its various configurations – is renowned for delivering strategy-driven competition against Manhattan’s iconic skyline. ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Chief Engineer, Jérémy Colançon, applies his eight campaigns of experience to present the inside line on Formula E’s revered US double-header.
Energy Sensitivity – In comparison to other circuits on the Season 8 calendar, the Brooklyn Street Circuit ranks medium to low in terms of energy sensitivity. This means that energy consumption is quite straightforward, with the best places to recover and conserve being before Turn One, Six and Nine.
Battery Management – Due to extremely high ambient temperatures, Formula E’s most recent races in Jakarta and Marrakech have been battery limited. We anticipate that this trend will continue in New York and managing battery temperatures is something that we will have to consistently consider. Fortunately, we are well placed to monitor and manage this situation.
Overtaking – Due to the Brooklyn Street Circuit’s lower energy sensitivity, it will be more difficult to overtake in comparison to recent races. This means that qualifying well will be crucial to unlocking the weekend. The best places to overtake are into Turns One and Six, while it is also possible to pass into Turns Nine and 10, although this is challenging.
Safety Cars and Full Course Yellows – The Brooklyn Street Circuit has very little runoff area and because the barriers are close to the track, there is a medium to high chance of a Safety Car and/or Full Course Yellow during the race. Any form of disruption will have a big impact upon race strategy and will allow teams to be more flexible and adaptable around energy management and deployment. Anytime extensions may also impact battery temperatures further, which will also be important to monitor.
Attack Mode – Attack Mode has been critical to every race so far in Season 8 and will again play a key role in New York. Because there are few overtaking opportunities, passing on equal power will be difficult, meaning that timing the Attack Mode activation well will be crucial in order to make progress.
