Maserati MSG Racing ready to take on Mexico City

Maserati MSG Racing are due to start 2025 with a fiesta as Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne take to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the second round of ABB Formula E’s Season 11.

The opening round São Paulo that occurred in December left the team with a first view of how they stacked up against the competition. An early departure from the race for Jake left it all to Stoffel to start the year with some points, finishing P10 after post-race penalties were applied.

There were a lot of take aways and learnings from Brazil that Maserati MSG Racing hope to put into action this weekend.

In Their Words

Jake Hughes, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing
“The second round of the season is here and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s always a pleasure to race in front of the Mexican crowdwith one of the best events and atmospheres of the year. Coming off the back of a disappointing first round, a lot of that was out of our control so I think we go into Mexico still with a positive mentality. From what we managed to do pre-season, knowing that if we do the same thing again, then we should be on for a better result than São Paulo.”

Stoffel Vandoorne, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing
“Mexico is going to be a completely different challenge compared with São Paulo. The tracks are basically the opposite; whilstSão Paulo was long straights, very hard braking zones and straight-line braking zones, Mexico is all about combined corners. It’s a completely different philosophy and I think that’s going to bring some challenges for everyone to understand. Like São Paulo, Mexico is a race where qualifying will be really important, so we’ll obviously try and put a lot of focus on that and qualify at the front. Overtaking is going to be harder than São Paulo, but there will still be action, especially with the Attack Mode being so powerful this year. I’m excited to get going. The team were quite strong last year [in Mexico City] and had a good result so hopefully that’s something we can repeat this year. One point in São Paulo, hopefully a few more can come in Mexico.”

Cyril Blais, Team Principal, Maserati MSG Racing

“We’ve put in a lot of work since the season opener in São Paulo and, whilst it’s fair to say that we didn’t have the start to the season that we wanted, we’re doing everything we can to make sure that we are as prepared as possible for Mexico this weekend. It’s a tricky track, highly technical with less overtaking opportunities than São Paulo, so qualifying well will be crucial. As always, the careful management of tyre degradation will be key to success during the race and we’re working hard on our strategy to maximise our opportunities. It’s not all about out right straight-linespeed; last time out we saw what a different impact Attack Mode is having with the Gen 3 Evo from a strategic perspective so there are plenty of chances for us to capitalise on our performance during the race.”

Maria Conti, Head of Maserati Corse
“The Mexico E-Prix is traditionally when the season really kicks into high gear. After the first race in São Paulo, all teams were introduced to the new features and upgrades of the GEN 3 Evo. It was a crucial test and now we're ready to dive back into the Formula E Championship, which increasingly showcases Maserati’s growing commitment to motorsport and its iconic racing DNA. Formula E is not just about Maserati’s dedication to electric cars, it is also a testing ground for bringing track innovations to the road as we look to the future. We're excited to hit the track in Mexico City, one of the fastest circuits of the year, and to push our Tipo Folgore single-seater to its limits.”

A range equipped with 4-cylinder hybrid powertrains – available for Grecale – and V6 petrol, with rear-wheel and four-wheel drive, embodying the performance DNA of the Trident brand. The top of the range is made up of the MC20 super sports car and the MC20 Cielo spyder, powered by the ground-breaking 100% Maserati Nettuno V6 engine, which incorporates F1-derived technologies into the power unit of a standard production car for the first time. The GranTurismo is available with both the high-performance V6 petrol engine, derived from the Nettuno, and a 100% electric version: the GranTurismo Folgore, the first car in the Modena-based brand’s history to adopt this solution. The full-electric range also currently includes the Grecale Folgore, Maserati’s first 100% electric SUV, and the GranCabrio Folgore. Finally, the House of the Trident's latest addition is the Maserati GT2 Stradale, the road-legal version of the GT2 that took Maserati back to the track in closed-wheel championships. The heart of the new super sports car is the V6 Nettuno engine, reaching 640 hp (471 kW) in the latter configuration. The GT2 Stradale is therefore the most powerful road-going Maserati with an internal combustion engine.
