ROKiT Venturi Racing secured points in the face of a challenging day at the ExCeL arena as Formula E made a highly anticipated return to London.
As the World Championship’s newest track, the ExCeL circuit posed a fresh and unique challenge and naturally, data collection was the top priority over the course of practice.
With the circuit running both inside the arena and outdoors on its access roads, rainfall created challenging track conditions with a wet to dry crossover at the start and end of each lap.
In qualifying, Edoardo Mortara set the pace in Group 1 but due to improving conditions, started in P16 while from Group 4, Norman progressed to Super Pole for the third time this season, securing P6 on the grid.
At the start of the race, Norman maintained position but a promising getaway for Edo saw the Swiss-Italian advance to P15 before a Full Course Yellow paused proceedings.
By activating Attack Mode with 32 and 24-minutes + 1 lap of racing remaining, Edo fought forward to P12 in hot pursuit of a points finish with the top 10 within reaching distance.
After colliding with Sergio Sette Camara in Turn 16, Norman received a five-second time penalty and by reaching critical levels of energy management, fell down to P10.
On the final lap of the race, Norman was forced to retire after an overuse of energy while Edo took the chequered flag in P11.
Post-race, Nissan e.dams drivers Sebastien Buemi and Oliver Rowland were disqualified after exceeding the maximum amount of usable energy, promoting Edo up to P9 with two points on the board.
“Today was a difficult day for the team. Edo did a fantastic job in qualifying by topping his group, even with the disadvantage of the track being wet, you can’t ask for more. With Norman in Group 4, we knew we had a shot at Super Pole and with the track drying, that worked in our favour. Starting from P6, we had the opportunity to score some solid points today but we weren’t able to capitalise on that. Edo showed that we have some pace in the car and we’re very fortunate to come away with two points. We have a lot of work to do ahead of tomorrow.”
“Because of the bad weather and track evolution, qualifying in Group 1 was a big disadvantage today but I think we showed some good one-lap pace by topping our session. It was very difficult to overtake during the race and starting from P16, we were lucky to finish inside the top 10 with the disqualification of both Nissan cars. We’re fortunate to get to race again tomorrow, and hopefully, we can achieve the results that we know we’re capable of.”
“Track evolution was a benefit for me in qualifying, and from Group 4, I was able to start from P6. It was very difficult to overtake in the race and during my first Attack Mode, I tried to pass Sette Camara but we came together in Turn 16. From there and with the penalty, it was damage limitation and there was very little I could do. Today was a big opportunity to score a lot of points and it’s a bitter and difficult pill to swallow. We need to understand where we went wrong with the race strategy and come back stronger tomorrow.”
