ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Norman Nato secured six points from a hard-fought New York City E-Prix, taking P7 in the second leg of the Brooklyn double-header.
Changeable weather cast an air of unpredictability around qualifying for the 11th round of the season, and while Norman took P10, team-mate Edoardo Mortara was P14 from Group 1.
A difficult start for Norman relegated the Frenchman down to P13 by the end of lap 1, but with a calm and calculating approach, he quickly fought forward.
By overtaking Rene Rast, Alex Lynn and Sebastien Buemi, the 29-year-old ascended to P10, locked in a closely contested fight for points in a competitive field.
Amidst an action-packed final lap, Norman remained in complete control and ascended to P8 by overtaking Mitch Evans and Sergio Sette Camara on the run to the chequered flag.
A 10-second time penalty for Lucas di Grassi, in turn, promoted Norman to P7 – a result that marks the Frenchman’s second points finish of the season so far.
Edo meanwhile took P17 at the flag after recovering from an early incident with BMW’s Jake Dennis when fighting for P13.
“After a difficult start, Norman drove a good race today to recover to the top 10 and score his second points finish of the season. For Edo, his incident with Dennis was unfortunate and I think he had the pace this weekend to finish inside the top 10. After such a strong performance in Puebla, we hoped for more championship points here. We need to reset now so we can come back fighting in London.”
“Being in Group 1 in qualifying is never ideal but from the middle of the field, I was quite optimistic for the race. At the start, I lost a few positions but I was able to recover quite well. During my first Attack Mode, I tried to overtake Dennis for P13 but we made contact and from there, there was very little I could do. I struggled for pace overall and I was hoping we could be more competitive. After the success we had in Puebla and our performance from this weekend, it shows that things can change quite quickly in Formula E. We need to keep our feet on the ground and remain focussed so we can improve for the next race in London.”
“Qualifying was an improvement from yesterday but because I was starting on the left-hand side of the grid, I knew that the start would be difficult. I lost three positions on the first lap but I was able to make up some places early on. I was in a good position with energy and we were faster than the cars ahead throughout the race. In the end, I think we got the strategy right and we were aiming for points so to recover from P13 on lap 1 to P7 at the flag is a good performance. We know that we have the pace in the race, and if we can improve on our qualifying in the coming races, I’m confident that we can score some big points and get into the top five.”
