This outlook motivates our every move, and while we innovate to find the pinnacle of performance on track, we also strive to pioneer in our own culture to be at our apex back at base.
In São Paulo, our Director of Strategic Communications, Liz Brooks, was invited to speak at the Zero Summit as part of Formula E’s Accelerated Live forums - there, she discussed the role played by diversity in securing a net-zero future.
Having now worked in motorsport for more than 20 years, Liz has experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly, and now, with her eyes set on the future, shares our view that greater performance can be found in wider diversity.
“The key to taking strides towards a net-zero future is innovation, but in order to innovate, it’s extremely important to approach new situations from fresh perspectives,” she explains.
“That viewpoint is essential to us as a team, and it underlines what we do. We believe that there is strength and creativity to be found in diversity, but in order to pioneer, we need to open opportunities first.
“An example of this is gender-diversity. Women make up 50% of the world’s population, yet in motorsport, participation hovers at around 7-10%.
“When it comes to driving, that percentage is even lower. This restricts a lot of talent, because in having such a low involvement, you’re missing out on a nearly half of the workforce.”
Opening opportunities is where the future lies, and by bringing new perspectives and experiences, new ground can be forged.
“In motorsport, we solve problems, and we believe that the best solutions come from as wide and diverse a group as possible,” continues Liz.
“If you’re in a room, and everyone looks like you and thinks like you, you’re going to get the same solutions and that will come at the expense of innovation
“As a team, we talk a lot about social sustainability – the human element of how we can drive lasting societal change and hopefully, create a impactful legacy.
“We want to encourage everybody to embrace a more diverse and open workforce and to really understand why this is so important for generations to come.
“In order to do that, we show the role models in our team to inspire the next generation, and we try to open ourselves up to talk about big issues that other major sports teams rarely talk about.
“We celebrate Pride, raise awareness around mental health, talk about stress and how we cope with the good and the bad.
“The simple truth is that while the good days are great, but it’s on the tough days that you learn. By embracing what’s difficult, you only become stronger.”
This belief of equity over equality fundamentally powers Maserati MSG Racing’s working culture– an environment where everyone is welcome, respected, and celebrated.
“That transcends into our culture of equity, and unfortunately, equity and equality are sometimes confused,” adds Liz.
“Equity is about creating a level playing field and understanding positions of advantage and disadvantage so those who have less get more so everyone can be in the same position.
“We have found total performance in our differences and have come up with new ideas as a result. That’s what you need as a racing team.”
