In Detail
ROKiT Venturi Racing delivered a strong recovery performance in Race Two of the 2022 New York City E-Prix by bouncing back to the top 10 at the Brooklyn Street Circuit.
A difficult qualifying left the Monegasque marque facing an uphill battle in the race, with a brake-by-wire issue relegating Edoardo Mortara to 21ston the grid while Lucas di Grassi lined up 18th after having his two fastest laps from Group B deleted.
By securing a strong start, Lucas immediately advanced to 17th by overtaking Jean-Eric Vergne while Edo also made progress after passing both Oliver Turvey and Pascal Wehrlein on the first lap.
Opting to utilise a conservative strategy initially, both Edo and Lucas under consumed energy over the opening third to enter the closing stages of the race with a better state of charge.
The pair used this to their advantage and by spending more energy upon activating Attack Mode, began to fight through the field.
Lucas activated his boost in power 20 minutes from the end while Edo followed suit in the 28th minute, with the duo battling forward to 11th and 12th and on the verge of points.
In the closing minutes, Lucas was forced to retire from the race after coming to blows with Vergne in Turn Six, which, in turn, allowed Edo to advance to 10th.
The Swiss-Italian maintained this position at the wave of the chequered flag and by also setting the fastest lap of the race, recorded two points.
As a result, Edo holds second in the World Drivers’ Championship with 144 points while ROKiT Venturi Racing also sits second in the Teams’ Standings with 228 points.
The FIA Formula E World Championship’s eighth season will resume on 30-31 July, 2022, for the double-header London E-Prix at the ExCeL Circuit.
In Their Words
“In Formula E we win and lose as a team and today has been more difficult. Track position is everything in New York and because it’s so difficult to pass, qualifying well is crucial. Unfortunately, our qualifying didn’t go to plan, and this hampered our chances quite heavily for the race. Our long-run pace was quite strong, and we were able to do a good recovery with both drivers. Lucas had contact when he was fighting for points and had to retire and, after starting second last, Edo came through to finish 10th with the fastest lap. Today was about damage limitation and we know that we have the performance and the potential to fight at the front. We need to learn from this weekend, move onto the next one and optimise all that we can in London.”
“Today was quite difficult from my side but I’m happy to leave New York with at least some points. In qualifying I had a brake-by-wire issue on the car which meant that I couldn’t do a lap and had to start at the back of the grid. The pace was strong though and we made good progress by overtaking 11 cars to finish 10th with the fastest lap. Scoring points consistently is important, especially at this stage of the season, and now, our full focus goes onto London.”
“Overall, an eventful day. We showed good pace at the start by placing third in FP3 and posting the fastest time in Group B but unfortunately, a penalty put us back to 18th on the grid. Despite this, I was able to recover well, and we fought all the way up to the points. When I was overtaking for 10th in the final few laps, JEV [Jean-Eric Vergne] crashed into the rear of my car which meant that I had to retire. It’s frustrating not to have our hard work rewarded but I know that we can come back in London.”
