ROKiT Venturi Racing experienced a challenging yet promising opening race in the double-header New York City E-Prix as the Monegasque marque returned to The Big Apple for the first time since 2019.
Facing a disrupted practice programme as a result of a shortened FP1, the team showed promising pace in FP2 prior to qualifying for the first event of the weekend.
In a difficult session, Norman Nato took P19 while team-mate Edoardo Mortara lined up in P23 after being unable to use full power in his one-shot run from Group 1.
From rows 10 and 12 on the grid, the French and Swiss-Italian pairing adopted a conservative strategy from the outset by underconsuming energy to extend long-term battery life.
With this approach, Norman carefully worked his way through the field to run as high as P12 – setting the fastest lap en route – before falling to P15 after getting forced offline in the right-hand hairpin of Turn 10.
Edo meanwhile continued to play the strategy game and ascended to P14, gaining nine positions to front a 14-15 result for ROKiT Venturi Racing at the chequered flag.
“Today just goes to show once again how fast things can change in Formula E. A problem during Edo’s qualifying prevented him from using the full 250kW available while Norman didn’t manage to pull a clean lap together. Starting from the back is always challenging but we showed some promising pace and we know we have a fast package – there are positives we can take. Thankfully, this weekend is a double-header so we reset, and we go again tomorrow.”
“We were able to show some really good pace in FP2 but an issue in qualifying compromised my race today. When I started my push lap, I wasn’t able to go into the 250kW mode so I did my group run with a 50kW power disadvantage to my competitors. Starting from P23, the only way was forward but we were able to do an intelligent race and I gained nine positions to finish P14. We know that the car is working well here and I think points are achievable tomorrow.”
“It’s a shame that we weren’t able to carry over our pace from FP2 into qualifying. I should have done better and we had the performance to score points. Starting at the back is tricky but there is always a possibility to fight forward. In the second-half of the race, I was in quite a good position but I was crashed into twice which lost me four positions. Fortunately, we get to go again tomorrow and I know that if we can start inside the top eight, we can compete for big points.”
