In Detail
ROKiT Venturi Racing triumphed at the 2022 Marrakech E-Prix, with Edoardo Mortara tasting victory in the FIA Formula E World Championship’s return to Morocco.
The team showed promising pace after topping FP1 at the Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan and carried this form forward into qualifying.
Both Edo and team-mate, Lucas di Grassi, launched their respective qualifying efforts from Group A and while the former set the pace, the latter fell marginally shy of the duel stages.
By defeating Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein in the Quarter and Semi-Finals, Edo faced Antonio Felix da Costa in the pole position decider and missed out on the top spot by only 0.081 seconds.
He maintained his second-placed starting spot when the race got underway and ascended to the lead in the eighth minute when Da Costa activated Attack Mode for the first time.
Lucas, meanwhile, also made progress and after starting from 10th and losing ground on the first lap, quickly battled back into the points-paying positions.
At the head of the field, Edo activated his first Attack Mode with 37 minutes remaining, but despite relinquishing the lead, overcut Da Costa on his second deployment to regain control.
From here, the Swiss-Italian settled into a controlled rhythm and kept cool in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment, with both DS Techeetah drivers in hot pursuit behind.
By fending off two separate attacks from both Da Costa and Jean-Eric Vergne late on, Edo went unchallenged to the line to secure his third victory of Season 8 and the fifth of his career.
After duelling back into the top 10, Lucas also made consistent progress throughout the race and with careful energy management, fought to sixth with 15 minutes remaining.
At the penultimate corner of the final lap, the Brazilian successfully overtook Nyck de Vries for fifth to score 11 points after also setting the fastest lap.
Combining this haul with Edo’s 25 points and ROKiT Venturi Racing leads the World Teams’ Championship with 205 points while Edo also heads the Drivers’ Standings.
Formula E’s eighth season will continue in New York City on 15-16 July.
In Their Words
“After taking victory with Edo, fifth with Lucas and also the fastest lap, we can be very proud of our performance today. With the high temperature, the management of the battery was extremely challenging. We stuck to our strategy, executed it perfectly and it allowed us to deliver a strong haul of points to take the lead in both World Championships. Edo is on great form and had another very convincing drive today. Lucas also drove another great race to go from 12th on the first lap to snatching fifth in the penultimate corner. From here, we need to prepare for New York, be confident in our race prep and focus on the task at hand so we can maximise and take advantage of every opportunity that comes our way.”
“Today’s win comes down to an incredible team effort and I’m extremely happy with this result. We showed some positive pace but then experienced some issues in FP2 and honestly, I wasn’t sure if we could turn it around. We did very well in qualifying to get on the front row and during the race, the team had a plan and strategy in place and it worked perfectly. There was a lot of pressure throughout from Antonio [Felix da Costa] and JEV [Jean-Eric Vergne], and the high temperatures made the battery, tyres and energy difficult to manage. In the end, we managed everything perfectly and we can be very proud about this result.”
“I’m very happy with my performance today. I lost some ground at the start but my pace was strong and I was able to recover quite quickly. A clever strategy put us in a good position to challenge for a strong points haul and on the final lap, I was able to overtake Nyck [de Vries] to take home fifth place, with the fastest lap. Next up we have New York which is a track that I really enjoy and I’m confident that we can maintain our current form and momentum.”
