After six hard-fought races, ROKiT Venturi Racing stormed to the Teams’ Championship Title in the Grand Final of Formula E: Accelerate, beating Dragon Penske Autosport and BMW i Andretti to the top spot.
Holding three victories and four podiums from five races, Monaco’s only racing team and driver, Erhan Jajovski held P1 in both the Teams’ and Drivers’ Standings, however, with double points on offer, there was still everything to play for in Round 6.
In qualifying for the final race of the season, Erhan secured P3 on the grid while team-mate, Lorenz Hoerzing, maintained his upward trajectory in one-lap pace by netting P7.
With Drivers’ Championship rival Frederik Rasmussen starting from pole position, it was vital for Erhan to overtake, and when the 25-minute race got underway, the Macedonian maintained a competitive P3.
When Rasmussen set the fastest lap – a landmark moment in the title fight – Erhan soon began to fight back but contact with the wall on a push lap heavily impacted the 25-year-old’s car performance.
This forced Erhan into a defensive approach, but with a deficit in straight-line speed, he slipped down to P5, getting overtaken by Jarno Opmeer and Kevin Siggy in the final minutes.
Erhan maintained this position until the chequered flag waved to front a haul of 28 points as Lorenz secured P8 after a hotly contested fight for the final points-paying positions.
By taking P5, Erhan secured the Formula E: Accelerate Vice-Championship, eight points shy of Rasmussen although the fight for the Teams’ Title far from over.
In the second leg of the Accelerate Driver Challenge, a win for Edoardo Mortara extended ROKiT Venturi Racing’s total tally by a further 25 points.
With a total of 195 points on the board, the Monegasque marque secured the Teams’ Championship Title, finishing 36 points clear of the rest of the Formula E field.
“We’re delighted to win Teams’ Championship. I want to thank Erhan and Lorenz for racing with us in Formula E: Accelerate and for delivering such a strong result – they have been fantastic ambassadors for ROKiT Venturi Racing and we’re very proud of both of them. Erhan and Lorenz make it look easy but we know how much effort they put in week in, week out, to perform at such a high level. Esports is such a great platform for reaching a new and rapidly growing audience, not only for Formula E and the championship but also for us as a team.”
“Obviously, I’m disappointed not to win the Drivers’ Championship but in the end, it is what it is and that’s motorsport! With Frede [Rasmussen] starting from pole position, I knew it was important for me to overtake him but it was so difficult to pass because the track is so narrow and the straights are so short. With Frede in P1 with the fastest lap and me in P3, I knew that the only way I could win the title was if I set the fastest lap myself. I went for it but unfortunately, I clipped the wall and my car was completely broken – I was really down on top speed. I slowly started to drop back and there wasn’t anything I could do. I would like to congratulate Frede for winning the Drivers’ Title, thank Formula E for organising Accelerate, and thank my team, ROKiT Venturi Racing, for supporting me. It feels good to clinch the Teams’ Championship after such a hard-fought campaign! Hopefully, we will see each other again in Season 2.”
“I want to say a big thank you to ROKiT Venturi Racing for putting their faith in me and for supporting me over the course of Formula E: Accelerate. It’s been an up and down season, but I’ve enjoyed every second of it. The start to my season was quite difficult but I think I was able to recover well in the final three races to consistently finish inside the top 10 and put regular points on the board. Winning the Teams’ Championship is a great achievement and it feels fantastic. This is a moment in my esports career that I will never forget!”
