The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez served as an atmospheric backdrop when ROKiT Venturi Racing returned to the streets of Mexico City for the first time since Season 6 last weekend.
As one of Formula E’s most iconic races, spirits were high for the sixth edition of the Mexico City E-Prix and from start to finish, the action was intense and the competition thrilling.
When the race got underway, it signalled the start of Formula E’s eighth race in the country of Mexico, but beforehand, Monaco’s only racing team made steady progress throughout practice.
When we entered qualifying, we did so with high hopes and from Group A, driver Edo successfully advanced to the duel stages for the second race weekend in succession.
By beating Robin Frijns and André Lotterer in the quarter and semi-finals, our Swiss-Italian star again fought for pole position and qualified in second place, falling just short of Pascal Wehrlein.
Starting from the front row for the second time in three races, it wasn’t long into the E-Prix before Edo began to challenge Wehrlein for the lead.
With a bold overtaking manoeuvre into Turn One, Edo snatched first position from the German on lap eight and held the place until lap 28 when he was passed by both Porsche drivers.
By leading 19 laps in the race, Edo added to his existing tally from Diriyah and by leading a total of 38 laps, has now led 33% of all racing laps so far this season.
After 45 minutes + one lap of hard-fought racing, Edo ultimately finished in fifth place to score 10 points – a result that allowed him to score his 250th point in Formula E.
This coincided with his 50th race start in the series after joining the grid in 2017.
Although a mistake cost Lucas di Grassi in qualifying, the Brazilian charged hard throughout the race and by performing a total of 12 overtakes, took a provisional eighth at the line.
Unfortunately, a five-second time penalty post-race demoted the Season 3 champion to 12th although by taking the fastest lap, he scored his ninth in Formula E to date.
By adding 10 points to our tally so far this season, we also successfully extended our lead in the World Teams’ Championship, maintaining our 100% points-scoring record in 2022.
As a team, we have now finished inside the top 10 in five consecutive races – the longest active points scoring streak of any team on the Formula E grid.
Over the course of the weekend, we also completed our 1,000th kilometre of running this season and since Season 1, have driven over 30,000kms using fully electric power.
This is almost three times the direct distance from the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez to Rome’s Marconi Obelisk – the heart of the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR which marks the next stop on the Season 8 calendar.
All roads lead to the Italian capital, and with 52 days to go until we resume Season 8, we’re already relishing the chance to go racing again this April.
