Formula E’s eighth season is over, and after eight months of competitive racing, a champion has been crowned.
Seoul was the backdrop to the final battle of the campaign, with highly anticipated street racing finally taking place in the South Korean capital since its original planned debut in Season 6.
In the final weekend of the season, and the last races of Gen2, everything was to play for as Formula E completed its 99th and 100th races in history.
As soon as action commenced, ROKiT Venturi Racing showcased its pace from the get-go and in qualifying for Race One, drivers Edoardo Mortara and Lucas di Grassi both progressed to the duels.
Although Edo fell out of contention in the Quarter-Finals, Lucas battled his way into the decider to secure his second front row start in as many races.
The Brazilian took advantage of his opportunity to snatch the lead immediately, although a lack of grip in wet conditions forced him down to third by the end of lap one.
By delivering a calculated drive, Lucas finished in third at the flag to secure his third podium for Monaco’s only racing team and the 39th of his career to date.
Crucially, however, this paved the path to scoring his 1,000th point in Formula E – a landmark result that no other driver has been able to achieve.
After facing difficulties in the first race with a right-rear puncture, Edo bounced back in Race Two and was determined to end the season on a high.
He topped FP3 and Group A qualifying to progress to the head-to-heads before winning his Quarter and Semi-Final duels to make it to the Final.
Although he missed out on pole position to Antonio Felix da Costa, the Swiss-Italian lined up second on the grid and the front row for the sixth time this season – more than any other driver – and from there, staged an impressive drive.
Edo passed Da Costa from the outset and dominated the final race of the season to win Formula E’s 100th E-Prix after poetically winning the series’ 50thin HongKong.
This marked his fourth win of Season 8, the sixth of his career, our eighth as a team, our 10th podium of the season, and our 21st top-three result in Formula E to date.
Most crucially, the victory added to our points haul from the weekend and by amassing 295 points during the 16-race season, ROKiT Venturi Racing won the vice World Teams’ Championship.
This points helping is more than double of our total haul of Season 7 and equates to almost 60% of our all-time points total in Formula E.
En route to this achievement, we turned a total of 249 laps in Seoul and 2,249 laps throughout the season – the equivalent of driving 5,790 kilometres. This is our highest mileage from one single season to date.
As Formula E’s eighth season draws to a close, the next chapter is about to begin as Season 9 opens a new era for the world’s premier fully-electric racing series with its third generation of competition.
