After the madness of Mexico City, Formula E arrived in Hong Kong for the fifth race of Season 5 – a venue which already held good memories for the team.
The Central Harbourfront Circuit is one we’ve traditionally performed well at – and that form continued in 2019, as Edo flew to P3 in Qualifying while Felipe cemented P9.
Despite a three-place grid penalty demoting Edo to P6 on the grid, we were still in a position to fight for a second haul of silverware in Season 5 – and fight is exactly what we did.
Taking a cautious approach on the first lap, both Edo and Felipe maintained their starting positions before beginning to attack.
Following a brief safety car period caused by a three-way collision between Felipe Nasr, Pascal Wehrlein and Jerome d’Ambrosio, inroads were immediately made, with Edo and Felipe fighting forward.
A sudden loss of power for race leader Oliver Rowland allowed Edo to advance to P5 – but the Swiss-Italian racer’s charge didn’t stop there, as he passed Gary Paffett for P4.
When Stoffel Vandoorne experienced a driveshaft failure, silverware was already on the cards with Edo now in P3 – but a late incident between Sam Bird and Andre Lotterer suddenly changed the game completely.
Edo inherited P2 as Lotterer slowed with a puncture, before a post-race penalty for Bird – who was deemed to have caused the incident – propelled us to our maiden victory.
With Felipe completing the top five in an equally impressive performance, the 2019 Hong Kong E-Prix marked our largest points haul to date, recording 35 points in what was Formula E’s landmark 50th E-Prix.
